MGOC Contributor Event: Heidi Ruby Miller, Jason Jack Miller, and Timons Esaias at 2013 Pennwriters

Many Genres One Craft editor Heidi Ruby Miller is honored to be an editor guest at the 2013 Pennwriters Conference at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott May 17 - 19.

If you've been waiting to submit your Science Fiction Adventure novel to Dog Star Books, Heidi will be taking pitches on Friday afternoon. Raw Dog Screaming Press will also be represented by Jennifer Barnes and John Edward Lawson at Pennwriters. Jennifer will be listening to pitches for RDSP's non-fiction imprint, Guide Dog Books, as well as appropriate fiction for the main line. John is interested in poetry collections and works of horror and dark fiction.

As many of you know, RDSP, by necessity, has a closed submissions policy for all its imprints, but the editors are happy to hear about your potential projects face-to-face at any of our literary events.

Heidi is also presenting a workshop on Sunday titled "50 Ways to Beat Writer's Block."

MGOC contributors Jason Jack Miller and Timons Esaias will also be author guests and will present workshops on Sunday.

Many Genres Signing at Confluence (Pittsburgh, 2011)

Last month, Many Genres authors were highly active at Pittsburgh's annual Science Fiction/Fantasy convention, Confluence 2011. Attendees included Heidi Ruby Miller, Jason Jack Miller, Lawrence Connolly, Diane Turnshek (pictured above), Timons Esaias, and Michael Arnzen. Arnzen and Miller held a small "literary beer" to discuss issues raised in the book, and everyone from Many Genres sat on several panel discussions or participated in a lively book signing. Scott A. Johnson was also a special guest lecturer at the Alpha SF/F/H Workshop for Young Writers, a summer writing camp that is discussed at length in Diane Turnshek's article from our book, "Teaching Young Writers."

Confluence and Alpha are held annually in late July.

See photos from the Many Genres signing, Confluence and Alpha at Michael Arnzen's social networking site, michaelarnzen.com. Photos and coverage are also available on Confluence's facebook page.

MGOC Events: Pennwriters Conference 2011

Thanks to the participants in our all-day intensive workshop based on Many Genres, One Craft.

Seton Hill contributors (Timons Esaias, Heidi Ruby Miller, Jason Jack Miller, Natalie Duvall, Matt Duvall, and Michael A. Arnzen) taught one hour sessions on craft in the morning, then career in the afternoon.

Each participant received a free hardcover copy of Many Genres, One Craft as a thank you gift. Plus, lots of candy for answering questions!

The Author Tea and Signing was huge! So many great books and their creators all in one room. Signing for Many Genres were Timons Esaias, Cathy Teets of Headline Books, Inc., Heidi Ruby Miller, and Jason Jack Miller.

Jason Jack Miller and Heidi Ruby Miller had a wonderful group for their Sunday workshop The First Page is the Worst Page.

Jonathan Maberry, who was the keynote speaker on Saturday, was one of the bestselling authors kind enough to blurb Many Genres.

MGOC Contributor: Timons Esaias

TIMONS ESAIAS

EXCERPT from "Don't Be a Bobble-Head and Other Bits of Guidance" by Timons Esaias in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction:

I am fighting a personal war against this word, and am the author of “Esaias’s First Oration against Grimace” and “Esaias’s Second Oration against Grimace". This is a really lazy word that has little precise meaning. X grimaced is the equivalent of writing The character had a facial expression, and not much more, though there is a suggestion that it expresses a negative emotion or experience. It also tends to come up in a POV violation. I generally find that it gets used because the writer couldn’t think of a way to be precise.

I strongly suggest that you just never, ever use this word, except when describing gargoyles.

("Don’t Be a Bobble-Head, and Other Bits of Guidance" by Timons Esaias. Revised version of an essay first appearing in Fantastical Visions Volume II (Fantasist Enterprises, 2003).)

EXCERPT from "A Helpful Tactic: The Template Text" by Timons Esaias in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction:

When working on your first short stories or novels, I strongly suggest picking a Template Text to use as a reality check. It is best if the text chosen is a work of fiction that fits the following criteria:
1. A writer you wish to emulate
2. In the POV you intend to use
3. In the style you hope to acquire
4. With the same attitude toward the main character as you intend for your own piece.
